The purpose of the Application layer is to provide services directly to the user programs that want to use the network. All of the lower layers exist to make it possible for the Application layer to offer useful capabilities such as file transfer, remote login, and electronic mail.

As with the Presentation and Session layers, Application layer functions are implemented entirely in software. They reside in the applications and application protocols themselves rather than in dedicated hardware devices.

The Application layer is responsible for several processes, each of which is responsible for a series of methods:

  3. Application Level Reliability and Control
